Exploding a Poem
Close Reading, Writing from Reading, Analysis of Complex Text, and Fun
Often we struggle to have students read for depth, not coverage. In our rush for “information,” it is easy to overlook the fact that much of the meaning of a text is in the experience of reading, not the “takeaway” facts. Though this text is literary (a poem by Billy Collins, former US Poet Laureate), the skills involved in reading it closely and deeply (what we call “exploding” a text) are applicable to any level and content area.
