Situated Literacy Discussion

On page 11 & 12, the author talks about literacies that are "regulated by the pressure of social conventions and attitudes."

What are some examples of social attitudes in regards to literacy?  How have social attitudes shaped our literacies as individuals, within our homes, households, and communities?  What social attitudes serve us?  Which do not?
