Marissa's Burning Question Update

My burning question is "How do I create a writing/creative centered life for myself that is financially sustainable?" I know that it is possible. I know that I am going to have to push myself out of my comfort zones in ways I have not before. I know I am going to have to take risks. I know I am going to have to take very good care of myself because I am going to have many early mornings and many late nights to make this happen. I know from the comments I have seen on my blog and the support I am getting from this amazing group of people that I will not be alone. I know I need a plan, a coach and to get organized and be relentless until I am where I want to be. Next step- the grand plan.

Tell him who you are and that I sent you. He will make time for you; he is amazing and useful.

  5. I'm rambling a bit here, but hopefully you can gain something from this. par our discussions- I would really love to read and use in my classroom something that you have written about being black, because there is not a generic 'black experience", as you mentioned. Hearing you talk about the perceptions of the your (discourse) communities, the various ways people define you and how you define yourself- that would be something that could be used as a teaching tool. What you have mentioned is so much about identity and completely ties into the discussion we had yesterday in class- bringing in the identities and cultural experiences for literacy as school knowledge. As a teacher, I want to be educated and sensitive to this. You could create a book list (I could totally help with ones that I use in my classroom that vary from just having a main character who is black to ones that have historical relevance) that you could use as an appendix for your "curriculum". There are a lot of easy self-publishing things out there, not just Teachers Pay Teachers. But you will have a lot of the buzz words after this class in order to be able to market this type of project while you also work on your creative pursuits.

  6. Approaching passions as a business and thinking outside the box are my favorite conversations. I've owned two successful businesses (one was a physical location and the other was virtual) and can help brainstorm revenue streams, if you're interested.

  7. The more I hear your writings and listen to you speaking, I want to read 'Marissa or Mimi: Which one do you want to talk to' a memoir I've read a lot of memoirs recently and not a lot of them show the refection and the journey with the original voice and lyricism that your shorts stories based around your life growing up have reflected. Again, not a long term goal.
