"Situated Literacies" Ellie
So literacy comes in all sizes, shapes, and forms. Music has its own place in literacy, and so does computer science. When a child "reads" pictures, that is literacy. When we listen to audio books, that is literacy. This bears out in my work in oral traditions. When I taught English, I had my students collect stories from their friends, neighbors, and relatives. We compared the different ways language was used as apart from "standard" English. These "texts," according to Barton and Hamilton are every bit as valid as anything we will ever find in our social studies books or English anthologies. Only the domain is different. How can we use this information to create a more multicultural curriculum?
